I have a wood fossil very similar to this specimen. It measures 10″ x 6″ approx. and weighs 19lbs (7.5 kilos). I found it several years ago in central Chile close to the side of a country road. It was partially embedded in the ground, but when I saw it I realised immediately that it was a wood fossil. How old is the specimen in the photo, where was it found, and from what type of tree ? I would be very grateful for any information which would help me to identify my specimen. Many thanks.
I believe this is a fossil conifer tree similar to modern pine trees. If your specimen is the same as this one, then it will be reddish in color and very brittle, this one breaks in cubes. The only way to tell it’s age is to see the rocks in the area, but generally fossils from Chile usually are 200 million years old. There are also flat round rocks in Chile that have trilobites in them.
